Former UH QB Timmy Chang Reaches Plea Deal

NCAA Record Holder On Probation

Former University of Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang has reached a plea deal to charges of taking a video camera from a woman.Chang, 28, was booked on criminal property damage and harassment, which are both misdemeanors, officials said.The incident happened early on June 1, 2009, at a home in Pearlridge when a fight broke out, authorities said.Chang told a 23-year-old woman filming the brawl to stop and there was a struggle for the camera, officials said. He pulled the camera from her wrist and threw it on the roof of a nearby building, authorities said.

HONOLULU -- Lifeguards posted warning signs on Tuesday after a shark was spotted near shore at Kailua Beach Park.Honolulu Ocean Safety officials posted the alert at about 3:20 p.m.If a shark is not spotted again, lifeguards will likely take down the warning signs at about 7 p.m.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police say a 47-year-old man used a pick-up truck to ram two police cars after he fled from a traffic stop early Friday morning. The incident began when officers pulled the pick-up over in front of Waimalu Shopping Center.

Despite Furloughs, Student Scores Up

HONOLULU -- Hawaii public school student test scores went up this past year in every category except one, according to statistics released by the Department of Education on Thursday.The scores are from the Hawaii State Assessment test that students take annually to measure Adequate Yearly Progress. In April, 93,190 students took the HAS tests from the third through eighth grade and 10th grade.

HPD Steps Up Pedestrian Enforcement

HONOLULU -- Honolulu police on Wednesday stepped up its enforcement of pedestrian safety laws in Kalihi after two people died in the area in the last week.So far this year, nine pedestrians have died after being hit by cars on Oahu.

Lingle Urges Congress To Pass Akaka Bill

HONOLULU -- Gov. Linda Lingle sent a letter to all U.S. senators urging them to pass a law granting Native Hawaiians the federal recognition afforded to other indigenous groups.When changes were made, Lingle had withdrawn her support of the so-called Akaka Bill, named after Sen. Daniel Akaka, who introduced the measure.The Republican governor's letter sent Tuesday urges the Senate to vote and approve the Native Hawaiian legislation, which would put Hawaii on "equal footing" with other states that allow Native American tribes and Alaska Natives to establish their own government.

Honolulu’s average retail gasoline price dropped 2.2 cents in the past week to an average of $3.33 per gallon, according to a Monday release from GasBuddy.com, a weekly snapshot of gasoline prices around the nation.

DEA rounding up suspects in Big Island marijuana bust - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL Home

HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Federal drug agents are rounding up suspects in what appears to be a major marijuana bust on the east side of the Big Island. At least 13 have been arrested so far. Several of the suspects were transported on a US Coast Guard C-130 to Oahu.

Lingle vetoes civil unions bill

The governor says the issue should be put before voters in a ballot question.

Gov. Linda Lingle announced today that she will veto the civil unions bill, describing the measure as "marriage by another name."

Lingle said the legislative maneuvering by the House, which brought the bill to a vote on the last day of session, was wrong and that the issue is of such societal importance that it should involve all the people of Hawaii.

Big Island couple arrested on suspicion of growing marijuana - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL Home

HAWI, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 58-year-old North Kohala Man and his 60-year-old wife were arrested Tuesday on drug charges. After executing a search warrant, police say they found over 100 marijuana plants, 12 ounces of processed marijuana, hashish and growing equipment at home on Kaahuhu Road in Hawi. $2,990 in cash was also seized.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - If elected governor Republican candidate James "Duke" Aiona says he'll order an independent audit of the Department of Education (DOE). That's the cornerstone of the education plan he unveiled today while surrounded by teachers and principals. A team of Dutch scientists are planning to make an island the size of Hawaii entirely from 44million kg of plastic waste.

Recycled island, which is part of an environmental vision for the future, will be made from plastic waste currently bobbing around in the Pacific Ocean.

Solar and wave energy will be used to sustain the island and its 500,000 inhabitants who will live in a city similar to Venice, in Italy.
