Douglas Emmett Inc. has purchased one of the largest office complexes in downtown Honolulu for $232 million.
The Santa Monica, Calif.-based real estate investment trust’s acquisition of Bishop Square — two office towers totalling 960,000 square feet — increases Douglas Emmett’s (NYSE: DEI) share of Class A office properties in the Honolulu market to 36 percent, the company said Tuesday in a news release.

Japan beat Denmark 3-1 to go through to 2nd round

RUSTENBURG, June 24 (Reuters) - Japan advanced to the second round of the World Cup on Thursday when they beat their direct rivals Denmark 3-1 in Group E.

Japan, needing only a draw with the Danes to reach the last 16, took a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to two direct free kicks, the first a spectacular long range effort from Keisuke Honda in the 17th minute, the second a curling shot from the edge of the box by Yasuhito Endo.

Denmark pulled back a goal 10 minutes from time when Japanese keeper Eiji Kawashima saved a Jon Dahl Tomasson but the Danish forward scored from the rebound. Japan scored a late third through Shinji Okazaki three minutes from time.

Denmark, who would have gone through themselves with a victory, started promisingly but soon lost control to Japan, the second Asian team after South Korea to qualify for the second round.

Lingle signs bill allowing Hawaii counties to ban fireworks - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL Home

HONOLULU (AP) - Governor Linda Lingle has signed legislation that would allow Hawaii's four counties to limit or ban legal fireworks. Her decision on SB 1059 was announced Tuesday.

State law will continue to allow consumer fireworks on New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year and July 4. Aerials and other dangerous explosives are illegal except in permitted professional displays. Under the new law, counties are allowed to go farther and bar or limit legal fireworks sales in their jurisdictions.

HONOLULU -- Maui firefighters on Thursday faced a flare-up of a brush fire that scorched about 5,800 acres above Maalaea.High winds stoked the fire on the east side of the perimeter, about a quarter mile above the King Kamehameha Golf Course's clubhouse.The fire climbed up the mountain and does not pose a threat to any structures, officials said.

Honolulu Police help clean up graffiti in Chinatown

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - In Chinatown, police and the community are cracking down on crime.

On Saturday, more than 100 volunteers cleaned up paint and graffiti in the area.

Police say this kind of effort helps to reduce and deter crime because criminals see that the community is active in keeping their neighborhood safe.

"When people see rubbish, the perception is that there's crime, but when the community and crime isn't accepted", said Assistant Chief Debora Tandal.

Police say community involvement has helped reduce crime dramatically in Chinatown after an outbreak of gang violence early last year that included a deadly shooting and a stabbing.

Safe Sidewalk Project Provides Smoother Sidewalks

WAIKIKI, Hawaii -- The sidewalks of Waikiki will be smoother after Saturday.The Lions Club is finishing its massive project to patch the sidewalks to make them safer for all of us.The Safe Sidewalk Project launched in August of last year.Since then, volunteers have given their time twice a month to fix areas designated as potential trip hazards by the city.Saturday's focus will be on Kapahulu Avenue, from Kalakaua Avenue to the Ala Wai.

 HONOLULU -- On Oahu, 3,500 invaluable acres are about to be placed in the hands of state forest managers to help protect it.

The Trust for Public Land this week will dedicate the Hono-uli-uli Forest Reserve, which is a watershed and wildlife habitat.There's a lowland forest on the eastern slope of the Waianae Mountain Range, home to 35 threatened and endangered species, including 16 found nowhere else in the world.The watershed there also feeds the Pearl Harbor Aquifer, the largest drinking water resource on Oahu.

Lingle congratulates Hawaii Pacific softball team on World Series win

Hawai'i Gov. Linda Lingle is among those applauding Hawai'i Pacific's softball team for capturing their first NCAA Division II Softball National Championship.
"On behalf of all the people of Hawai'i, I want to congratulate the NCAA Division II Softball College World Series Champions – the Lady Sea Warriors of HPU," said Lingle in a statement issued by her office.

"The team put forth everything they had, coming from behind and holding off a bases-loaded rally by Valdosta State in the bottom of the seventh inning to capture their first NCAA Division II title."
Lingle said the team members are outstanding role models for our youth, demonstrating athleticism and sportsmanship. She also congratulated Head Coach Bryan Nakasone and his entire staff for their leadership and dedication.
