Typhoon churns toward eastern Japan

 TOKYO (AFP) – A typhoon churned toward eastern Japan, the country's meteorological agency said, issuing an alert over strong winds and high waves in the region.
Typhoon Chaba, which means hibiscus in Thai, was some 220 kilometres (136 miles) southeast of Wakayama, central Japan, on Saturday, packing winds of up to 144 kilometres per hour near its centre, said the agency.

Woman Admits Stealing From School

HONOLULU -- A former school administrative services aide pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing from the school where she worked.The deputy attorney general who investigated the case, Christopher Young, said Janel Echiberi, 35, used the school’s credit card for several years as if it were her own.

KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Kailua woman who claims police were "abusive" and "excessive" while arresting her 16 year old daughter for truancy Tuesday tells Hawaii News Now she will be contacting a lawyer to explore legal options against the Honolulu Police Department.

As of Wednesday a total of five Kalaheo High School students had arrested this week for either skipping class or getting to school late.

KAHOOLAWE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Volunteers are lining up for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.There's no room service. Or housekeeping. The boat over is no luxury liner. Still, there's a two year waiting list to get on the tiny island of Kahoolawe.

Volunteers are helping re-green the island's arid, windy landscape - as part of the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission's restoration program. On Kahoolawe, it's good to get your hands dirty. The work here isn't glamorous, but it is fulfilling.

Mysterious floating trash near Hanauma Bay caught in line

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Off the coast of East Oahu, near Hanauma Bay, a net filled with garbage, buoys and even a spare tire continues to float around Witch's Brew.

Culture clash as Honolulu's partial fireworks ban passes

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The new partial fireworks ban in Honolulu has set off a powder keg of complaints from folks in the Chinese community. Councilman Rod Tam has even gone so far as to say it is unconstitutional.

Certainly, there are plenty of supporters of this ban, especially in law enforcement, the fire department, and people with health concerns. But in the past couple of weeks, Honolulu Hale has been flooded with calls and emails from residents who say fireworks restrictions hurt their cultural identity.

A team of astronomers that includes the University of Hawaii's Nader Haghighipour has declared the discovery of a new planet that could have water on its surface.

Discovered using one of the telescopes of the W. M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, the planet is probably 30 percent larger than Earth and orbits a relatively small star, Gliese 581 in the constellation Libra the Scales.

"By determining the orbit of this planet, we can deduce that its surface temperature is similar to that of Earth," said Haghighipour.

This means that at least some of any water on its surface and in its atmosphere will be in liquid form rather than ice or vapour.
