Japan 7.4 seabed quake sparks tsunami scare, evacuations
TOKYO (AFP) – Scores of villagers on a remote Japanese island chain in the Pacific scrambled for higher ground after a major 7.4-magnitude offshore quake early Wednesday sparked a tsunami alert.The seabed tremor struck at 2:19 am local time (1719 GMT Tuesday), jolting people out of bed as loudspeakers blared across the islands and authorities warned of the risk of a two-metre (six-foot) high local tsunami.

The gift that keeps giving...
KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A central Maui elementary school gets a gift they hoped for this holiday season: rubber slippers.
Staff members at Kahului Elementary give slippers out to students that need them, but the school runs out of extras since more than half their kids struggle financially.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Calmer weather is in the forecast statewide as a storm system that brought heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds and Big Island snow moves east, away from the islands.
The storm system brought some impressive rainfall totals for the northern half of the state, especially between Thursday morning and 9 a.m. Friday. According to the National Weather Service, here are some of the higher totals, in inches:

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Governor-elect Neil Abercrombie announced the names of more cabinet nominees for his incoming administration. Abercrombie selected five department directors, plus two deputy directors.
Director nominees include:
- Bruce Coppa as director of the Department of Accounting and General Services.
- Keali'i Lopez, Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs
- Fred Pablo, director of the Department of Taxation
- Sunshine Topping as Director of Human Resources Development

It's expected to create a backlog near Iolani Palace, where the ceremony will take place.
If you need to go the state courthouse or library, make sure you plan a little extra time to find parking.
All meters around the palace will be closed for the entire day.
