Japan wins Asian Cup with 1-0 over Australia

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Japan won the Asian Cup for a record fourth time Saturday, defeating Australia 1-0 in the final of a tournament that served as an early rehearsal for a country set to hold the World Cup in 2022.
The lone goal was scored by substitute Tadanari Lee in extra time, a left-footed volley in the 109th minute. He was left unmarked from 10 yards out and beat Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Lee then ran to the center circle and fired a symbolic arrow into the night sky.
Japan midfielder Keisuka Honda was voted the tournament's most valuable player.

Oldest living Medal of Honor recipient Barney Hajiro dies

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The oldest living Medal of Honor recipient died Friday morning, according to his son. President Clinton awarded Barney Hajiro with the nation's highest military honor in 2000 at the White House for his service in World War II. Senator Inouye received the award the same day.
Army officials sent Hajiro, of Waipahu, to a rifle company in the 442nd Regimental Combat's 3rd Battalion because he was court-martialed for his second fighting offense. Sources say Hajiro's numerous heroic accounts include destroying machine-gun nests during the war, neutralizing a German stone house, and taking out a German patrol. While in the war, he was hit by bullets that penetrated his left wrist and severed a nerve, plus another went into his shoulder, and yet another -- his cheek.
Hajiro's family moved from Japan to Hawaii during WWI, then he left eighth grade on Maui to help support the family. He was the eldest of nine, so he went to work in the sugar cane fields that same year. He grew up to serve in the Army.
He was 94 years old.

HONOLULU -- A 37-year-old former Hawaii teen beauty queen changed her plea in court Thursday on charges of identity theft and money laundering.Trying to hide her face from the cameras, Susan Shaw quietly spoke to the judge."Guilty," said Shaw.After pleading guilty to all 140 counts including identity theft, credit card theft, forgery and money laundering, the mother of two faces a future behind bars.

LAS VEGAS (HawaiiNewsNow) - During the first night of competition, Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier was named preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner of the 2011 Miss America Pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Fuselier was the preliminary winner in a black Swim 'n Sport swimsuit and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
