Thieves Steal Fish From Waikiki Aquarium

HONOLULU -- Thieves stole 15 moi from a fish tank at the Waikiki Aquarium over the weekend, aquarium officials said.The thieves broke into the aquarium after closing and took 15 of 21 fish in the outdoor circular tank sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, officials said.

Searches of school lockers at standstill

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii's Board of Education revised its Chapter 19 policy on student conduct and discipline – allowing for searches inside school lockers. But more than a year after the policy was revised, administrators have still not started the controversial inspections.

"We haven't established protocols to go into the lockers. We haven't established what's going to happen, how we gonna do it? What happens if we do find things?" explains McKinley High School President Ron Okamura.

A high surf advisory is in place for all exposed north shores statewide, including those on Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.Advisories have also been posted on west shores of Kauai and Niihau where officials are warning of hazardous ocean conditions due to strong currents caused by the swell.Forecasts have predicted waves reaching well over 12' in face value along north shores statewide.

Hawaiian Airlines starts selling tickets on Haneda route

HONOLULU —

Hawaiian Airlines has started selling tickets on its new daily nonstop flights between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Honolulu.

Hawaiian’s inaugural flight from Honolulu to Haneda is on Nov 17, with the inaugural departure from Haneda to Honolulu taking place Nov 19.

“We have received a tremendous response to our announcement of new service to Haneda, and we know travelers have been waiting for this moment,” said Glenn Taniguchi, Hawaiian’s senior vice president of marketing and sales.

Flight #458 will depart Haneda daily at 23:59 and arrive at Honolulu International Airport at 12:05 the same day.
Flight #457 will depart Honolulu daily at 18:05 and arrive at Haneda at 22:05 the next day - Tokyo is 19 hours ahead of Honolulu and the flight crosses the International Dateline.

Congress Approves Honor For Japanese American Vets

HONOLULU -- Congress has passed a measure that would award a Congressional Gold Medal to Japanese-American veterans of World War II.The House passed the legislation by voice vote Thursday. The measure now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature.The bill gives the medal collectively to those who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service. About two-thirds of the servicemen were from Hawaii.The veterans volunteered to fight for the United States even though they were branded "enemy aliens" and some of their families were detained in internment camps."At a time when many of their fellow Americans questioned their loyalty to the United States, these Japanese-American soldiers enlisted and put their lives on the line to defend our freedom overseas while fighting against fear and discrimination at home," Hawaii Rep. Mazie Hirono said.

City Council Approves Fireworks Ban

HONOLULU -- The Honolulu City Council on Wednesday afternoon voted 7-2 to approve a ban on consumer fireworks.The fireworks ban is set to begin on Jan. 2, 2011. The ban would not allow fountains, sparklers and other novelty fireworks.Consumers could purchase firecrackers with a $25 permit. The permit would allow for the purchase of 5,000 firecrackers.That would be allowed for New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Chinese New Years, July 4th and religious and cultural events.

Raids in Chinatown

Police broke up three gambling dens in Chinatown during the last two weeks, and a top officer credited the public's help for some of that success.

"We actually love it when people give us information," said Maj. Susan Dowsett of the Honolulu Police Department's Narcotics/Vice Division. "That really is helpful."

Big Island Thieves Make Off With Marijuana Plants

HONOLULU -- Big Island police said armed men took several large marijuana plants during a robbery in Kurtistown on Wednesday.Police responded to a call at a home on Opeapea Street at about 4:40 a.m.Officers found a 39-year-old man with injuries. A 51-year-old woman and a 92-year-old man hid in the house during the invasion, police said.

Penn Again!

Penn will fight Hughes in November UFC card

B.J. Penn will get his wish.

Saying he wanted to fight as often as possible, Penn will return to the cage less than three months after his last fight to take on Matt Hughes in the co-main event of UFC 123 on Nov. 20 in Detroit.

Penn (15-7-1) will move back up to welterweight for the first time since a loss to Georges St-Pierre in January of 2009.

Survey finds surprising results on cell phone use

(NBC) - A recent survey found women spend more time talking and texting on the cell phones than men, but teenagers text more than anyone.

According to a recent Nielsen survey, women talk 22 percent more than men each month, about three hours and 10 minutes more, for a total of 14 hours and 16 minutes.

Fire crews rescue dog from trail

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Firefighters got an unusual call Monday morning. A dog that was accompanying hikers on the Hawaii Loa Ridge Trail above Hawaii Kai slipped and fell about 10 or 15 feet.

The hikers were about a mile into the three-and-a-half mile trail when the animal slipped around 10:00 AM. The dog was not hurt in the fall, but was unable to climb back up to the trail.

With assistance from the Air One helicopter, rescuers were able to locate the dog and bring it back on the trail, where it was reunited with the hikers.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Three Oahu schools have been recognized by the US Department of Education as Blue Ribbon Schools. Ewa Beach Elementary, Momilani Elementary and the Royal School have been named as recipients of the award.

The program honors public and private schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement, especially among disadvantaged and minority students.

HONOLULU -- Two teachers have been victims of assault on Oahu this week, according to Honolulu police.A 13-year-old boy on Tuesday elbowed and head butted a 35-year old female teacher in Honolulu, causing pain, swelling and small lacerations, according to a Honolulu Police Department report.Another assault case happened on Monday. This time a 12-year-old boy slapped a 41-year old female teacher when told to return to the classroom after recess. The student refused after getting two warnings, the report stated.Police arrested the boy.
